Open the notebook in the listing
Look for clear photographs of the interior, including a complete spread rather than a close crop of one corner. Check whether pages are lined, dotted, squared or blank. For a planner, inspect the week layout and the space allocated to each day. If you write long appointment notes, a small monthly grid may be decorative rather than useful.
Confirm whether the planner is dated, undated or tied to a particular academic or calendar year. Read the actual start and end dates. An undated format removes a deadline but asks you to fill in dates yourself, which may or may not suit your routine. Check any holiday references or week-start convention if those details matter to how you plan.
Match the binding to where you write
Measure the notebook against the bag or desk where it will live. Include the cover and binding in those dimensions. A spiral can affect the writing surface or catch on other objects; a bound book may behave differently when opened. Ask whether the seller provides photographs of the notebook open so you can understand the construction without assuming that all bindings lie flat.
Consider left- or right-handed use, the position of the margin and whether the notebook needs to fold back on itself. Check page count versus sheet count, since those terms can describe different totals. If paper properties matter for your pen, ask for the maker's specification or a relevant sample rather than assuming that a thick-looking page prevents every ink from showing through.
Choose cover details that survive ordinary use
Look at the full illustration with the binding and any elastic closure visible. Check whether the design appears on one side or both and whether the image wraps around the spine. A personalised name should remain readable within the cover's usable area. Request a proof with the actual wording if the order offers custom text.
For a gift, a short note on the first removable card can preserve the recipient's blank pages. Include any refill information if the notebook uses a replaceable insert. Before wrapping, check the page order, dates and binding operation. Keep the order details so you can identify the same format later without relying on the cover artwork alone.
