Try the outside dimensions on the wall
Measure the available wall area and the furniture below it. Make a paper rectangle representing the complete framed dimensions, then attach it temporarily with a suitable removable method. Stand at the usual viewing distance and sit where the room is normally used. A print that looks large on a shop page can appear small above a wide sofa, while a small hallway can make a large frame awkward. Include any frame projection from the wall if the picture sits in a narrow passage.
Check doors, switches, shelves and any space needed to reach them. Consider whether the artwork will sit alone or among other objects. If part of a group, lay the arrangement on the floor before making holes. Use the real outer measurements of each frame rather than assuming prints of the same paper size have equal borders.
Notice light during the day. Glare can obscure a glazed picture from the main seat, and a strongly lit location may have implications for the materials. Ask the artist or framer about appropriate display conditions for the particular work. Avoid treating every paper, ink, coating and frame as equally suited to a sunny window or damp room.
Clarify the piece you will receive
Read whether the listing is for a physical print, original artwork or a digital download. Check paper dimensions, printed image dimensions and whether a border is included. A photograph with a frame is not proof that a frame is supplied. If buying a download, confirm the file sizes, permitted use and whether you will need to arrange printing yourself.
Choose framing after you know those dimensions. Confirm the mounting method and hanging hardware with the frame supplier, and use fittings appropriate for the wall and complete weight. Keep the dog and children clear of the installation area. Do not improvise with adhesive products whose instructions do not cover the surface, weight and environment.
Check the artwork on arrival before discarding protective materials. Verify the image, orientation and condition in good light. Keep the print protected while arranging the frame, handling it as the maker recommends. Save the order information and display instructions so a future move does not turn a measured choice into a guessing exercise.
